My equipment for street photography

(March 2021) I put my equipment together depending on the job and the situation. Lately, however, I’ve been tending to take as little as possible with me. Especially when I’m taking photos on the street and at public events, it’s been a good idea for me to leave my big cameras and lenses at home. Instead, I’ve been shooting with two Fujifilm cameras for a few months now, the X-100V and the X-S10 with a fixed focal length of 35mm f/1.2.

My street photography equipment

The two cameras don’t look like professional equipment, but they take great pictures. People on the street react much more positively when I ask if I can photograph them. A small camera simply doesn’t look so threatening and the small X-100V with a fixed 23mm focal length is also inconspicuous in street scenes.

Street photography is about being able to react quickly and often inconspicuously. When I’m out on the street observing what’s going on, I don’t want everyone to see from afar that I’m a photographer! For me, the change from the large equipment to this reduced selection was a bit unusual at first. Instead of one zoom lens, I now work with two fixed focal lengths. The X-100V has a 23mm fixed lens. Converted to full-frame format, this is a 35mm wide-angle lens. The 35mm focal length on the X-S10 corresponds to a 50mm normal lens on a full-frame camera. So that I don’t always have to swap lenses, I usually have both cameras with me.

So here is my equipment list for my personal street photography:

  • Fujifilm x-100V
  • Fujifilm X-S10 body with a 35mm lens(XF35mmF2 R WR FUJINON)
  • A small clip-on flash for brightening up difficult lighting situations Fujifilm EF-20
  • Spare batteries for the cameras and the flash
  • Microfiber cloth if something gets on the lens
  • Replacement mouth-nose protection (unfortunately necessary at the moment)
  • Energy bars (when I’m hungry, nothing works)
  • Memory card incl. pencil case
  • Notebook + pen
  • Press card

All the equipment fits into a small, inconspicuous shoulder bag. Equipped like this, I’m flexible on the road and don’t have to lug kilos of equipment around, which is absolutely ideal for me when it’s time to get out on the road again.

Small update

The equipment I use is constantly changing, which shouldn’t be a big surprise. I still love my Fuji cameras because they are small, light, handy and deliver amazing quality. I swapped the X-S10 for the X-T4 a few months ago. The functions and quality are almost identical. However, the X-T4 is weatherproof, which is very important for me, because for some reason it rains very often when I’m at events.
