Corona in Munich
Images of a crisis: Munich during the coronavirus pandemic March 2020 – August 2022
The coronavirus pandemic presented society with unprecedented challenges and led to a deep division of opinions and attitudes. In Munich, a small but very loud group protested against the restrictions associated with the measures to contain the virus. Personal frustration about the restrictions was mixed with conspiracy myths. There was a risk that legitimate criticism of the measures would be hijacked by extremist groups.
The atmosphere at these protests was often tense. Media representatives were labelled “lying press” and the atmosphere became increasingly hostile. This development meant that I was often only wearing a stab-proof waistcoat and protective equipment when reporting. The increasing aggression made it impossible to rule out the possibility of verbal attacks turning into physical violence.
