100,000 Against the right in Munich

No matter how many participants there were. The police spoke of 100,000, the organisers of more than 200,000. It was definitely the largest political demonstration in recent decades.

Under the motto “Together against the right – for democracy and diversity“, thousands of people will meet in front of the Siegestor on 21 January 2024 in the afternoon to demonstrate for democracy, human rights, tolerance, diversity and solidarity. They are against right-wing agitation, anti-Semitism, sexism, queerophobia and racism.

A broad alliance of civil society organisations, including Fridays for Future, München ist bunt, Green City, CSD Munich, Greenpeace, verdi and many others, called for the event.

The background to this is the revelations made by the Correctiv research centre: several AfD and Werteunion/CDU members took part in a meeting with well-known neo-Nazis and right-wing extremists. Among other things, they discussed plans to expel people with a migration background.

So many people turned up that the rally had to be ended prematurely. The safety of the participants was no longer guaranteed. A short time later, a spontaneous assembly was organised and several hundred people marched from Siegestor towards Münchner Freiheit. At the beginning, the police tried to stop the demonstrators by force, but then had to let the procession go.
